The M-16 is one of the most common rifles used by the U.S. and has been used since Vietnam. It was issued in order to replace the outdated M-14. At first there were many issues with the rifle's firing mechanism and jamming. In environments such as the swamps and wetlands the M-16 was prone to jamming up, when the ejection mechanism was covered in dust or mud it added extra stress to it and caused the mechanism to improperly eject the round. The carbon fouling in the barrel was also a major problem but later in the war the US military added chromium to the interior which helped reduce the amount of fouling that stuck inside. The M-16 and its sister rifle the CAR-15 fired the 5.56 caliber round which was a much smaller bullet than the predecessor
Colt CAR-15 Commando (Orignially named the XM177)
The first carbine version of the M16 assault rifle appeared under the name of CAR-15 in 1965, an was intended for US Special Forces who fought in Vietnam. The original M16 was simply shortened by cutting the half of the length of the barrel (from original 20 inches to 10 inches) and by shortening the butt-stock by another 3 inches. The butt was plastic and retractable, the hand-guards were of triangular shape and the flash hider was of original three-prong type. The XM177 had most of the problems of the M-16 with poorer accuracy due to a shorter barrel.

M-79 Grenade Launcher "Blooper" , "Thumper"
The "Blooper" was a 40 milimeter grenade launcher that was the beginning of the grenade launcher family line. It was breech loaded and single shot. The "Thumper" had ladder sights to figure out drop for distance. By the end of the war it was starting to be phased out for the underslung XM148 (later became the M203)
In Vietnam the M-14 was the first rifle to be used by American forces. It did not jam up very often and had more stopping power due to a larger cartridge, it fired a 7.62x51 round. The M-14 was replaced and almost fully retired by the 1970's, though in modern wars the M-14 has had a resurgence and has been the basis for the M-21 and the M-25.

AK-47 (Chinese Model 56)
The AK-47 was a weapon that excelled in wet damp enviroments that usually jam up other rifles solid. Originally the AK series weapons were made in Russia but Kalashnikov never patented and protected the design, as a result many other countries started to copy the design. Romania had its own models, the Czech Republic had its own model and in 1956 the Communist Chinese had their own version. The reason the AK-47 was so easy to copy was due to the fact all the parts were stamped steel and wood, any industrialized country could effectively make a copy of the rifle for its military and due to the simplicity of design and reliability of the firing mechansim the weapon was and still is one of the most feared rifles in the world.
MAT-49, 7.62 Tokarev SMG
Originally a french firearm that shot a 9mm Parabellum but after the Viet Minh defeated the French they captured and converted the MAT-49 to use a cartridge more available to the NVA and Vietcong forces, the 7.62 Tokarev (a very powerful and large russian pistol cartridge).
SKS Rifle
The SKS Rifle above is a Simonov SKS. It's a Russian carbine developed in 1946 and is a gas operated, self-loading and semi-automatic rifle.
