1968
  • January 30 - 31 The Tet offensive erupts throughout South Vietnam lasting through late February.
  • March 16 The My Lai massacre takes place.
  • March 31 President Johnson announces he will not be running for re-election.
  • May 3 President Johnson accepts a North Vietnamese offer to conduct preliminary peace discussions.
  • May 4 - 5 A wave of attacks hit 109 cities, towns, and bases in South Vietnam.
  • November President Nixon is elected and promises to withdrawal from Vietnam.
  • December 31 American military strength in South Vietnam is 536, 100.

1969

  • February 25 Formal truce negotiation begin in Paris.
  • April 30 The U.S troops peak at 543,400. 33,641 Americans were killed in the war, greater than killed in the Korean War.
  • September 16 President Nixon withdraws 35,000 soldiers from vietnam and reduces the draft numbers.
  • November 15 the mobilization peace draws about 250,000 in Washington for the largest Anti-War protest.
  • December 1 First draft lottery since world war II is held in New York City.

1970

  • june 22 American usage of jungle defoliants in vietnam is halted.
  • August 11 South Vietnamese troops take over the defense of border positions from U.S troops.
  • October 24 South Vietnamese troops begin a new offensive into Cambodia.
  • November 20 American troops decrease to 334,600.
