U.S. Foreign Policy

  • During the Eisenhower years the United States replaced the French as the dominant colonial power in South Vietnam. What later became known as "America's commitment" resulted from the U.S. statement of respect towards the Geneva Accords, the Eisenhower promise to assist Diem, the commitment to the security of Indochina within the SEATO treaty, and the full-scale military assistance received by Diem from 1955.


  • The Kennedy Administration was extremely committed to The Cold War efforts, the Truman and Eisenhower Administrations.
  • "Domino Theory" If one nation fell to communism, then all the other neighboring countries would soon follow. Kennedy stuck strongly to this Policy, and believed that our involvement was critical. He gradually escalated our involvement in the Vietnam effort. 0700.jpg
  • JFK increased America's troops stationed in Vietnam from 500 to 16000 in 1963.
  • In July of 1969, President Nixon announces that US would stop sending soldiers to Asian lands, but would continue to support logistically and economically. Nixon also planned to assist pro-Western powers (Iran) by providing them with our Weapons.
  • March 1969-Nixon outlines a policy of "Vietnamization" a phased withdrawal of American ground troops, materials, advisors, etc.
