AFTERMATH FOR AMERICAN SOLDIERSAfter the Vietnam War the veterans weren’t treated as the heroes they were. When the soldiers came back from war they were blamed for starting the war and not trying to stop it. A large amount of the soldiers suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. A study found that about 19% of men that went to war and survived suffered from PTSD. Throughout the novel Tim O'Brien talks about Norman Bowker and how he couldnt handle the aftermath of war, even though Tim's transition was not as painful. "For years I'd felt a certain smugness about how easily I had made the shift from war to peace. A nice smooth glide - no flashbacks or midnight sweat. The war was over after all." (O'Brien) Bowker ended up commiting suicide because of the war. More On PTSD
AFTERMATH FOR VIETNAMESE SOLDIERSThe war caused damage to both North and South Vietnam. Throughout the war there was a large amount of bombs being set off and it caused a major population drop in Vietnam. The bombs not only wiped out people but they also took out many villages and homes of citizens. The uses of Agent Orange also affected the land in Vietnam, destroying all living things in its path. Not only did Agent Orange damage the land but it had an effect on people as well. Agent Orange caused many people to have deformities and damaged people’s appearance.
